Get Those Poopies Off!

The idea is to have your teeth outlive you. Period!

Blog-ImageLike many other diseases, you can take the necessary steps to prevent cavities, decay, and plaque in your teeth. Good preventive care involves effective removal of the bacteria doing the damage. This can prolong the life of your teeth for years. Here is what to do!

1. Reduce the amount of sugar in your diet. 95% of all cavities are caused by lifestyle habits such as drinking sugary sodas and juices and eating sugary foods. Streptococcus mutans love that sugar that feeds them. When the sugar is removed, cleaned off and/or not even present, then the bacterial poopie is vastly lessened.

2. Gently message your gums (a new way to “brush your teeth” ) with a soft toothbrush and warm water for two minutes twice a day and floss once a day to remove that plaque.

3. Use a fluoride toothpaste such as Prevident to both harden your enamel and create a hostile environment for the S.mutans.

4. Come in for a dental cleaning minimally every six months to detect tooth decay at an early stage.  Also to get a professional application of fluoride. Flouride is no longer just for kids.

5. And for some – wear a night guard if you clench or grind your teeth. Deep concentration or stress can cause you to clench or grind your teeth. The most common time for this to happen is while you are sleeping. Not only can this lead to headaches, jaw aches, ear aches, and neck stiffness, it can also cause tiny stress fractures in your teeth. These fractures allow sugar and decay to burrow deeper into your teeth and intensify damage to your teeth while sometimes putting you in severe pain.

Healthy teeth are always the foundation of a beautiful smile!

3. Nerve
4. Gingiva
5. Bone
6. Periodontal Ligament
7. Root
8. Cementum

The CROWN is the part of the tooth that is visible above the gums. You see this.

The ROOT is the part of the tooth below the gums. You cannot see this.

Healthy roots are surrounded by the GINGIVA and the BONEGingiva or “gums” is what we want healthy and strong and clean.

Deep inside the tooth is the NERVE which is surrounded by yellow, bony DENTIN and TUBULES. A “root canal” takes the nerve out of the canal it is in, inside the root.

CEMENTUM covers the roots with a thin layer of yellow, bony material. This helps hold your tooth in the bone.

Hard, white ENAMEL covers and protects the dentin above the gums. You can whiten this for a beautiful natural smile.

The PERIODONTAL LIGAMENT surrounds the root to act as a protector and shock absorber for the tooth. Your ligament is your shock absorber, your cushion, your anchor around every tooth.

Seduction: Your Most Powerful Tool

procelain-dental-crownsWhat is the most powerful tool of seduction in your arsenal? What is the one thing you have that, when used properly, can turn an ice queen into a kitten and make even the strongest women become bubbly little girls?

  • Is it your sense of style?
  • Your suave demeanor?
  • Perhaps your silver tongue?

Those things all are great, but there’s one thing you can use to greater effect than quite possibly all of them combined. Want to guess what it is?
It’s your smile.

When you don’t smile, others tend to see you as the doom and gloom person. You become one of those background people that simply, blends in. Even if you change how you dress or cut your hair, your smile is still your sexiest feature. I’ve seen people who suddenly change their attitude and start smiling more often. They go from wallflower to the person everyone wants to know.
So open your arsenal and use your most powerful tool!

Porcelain Fused to Metal Crowns

Dental Crowns

Dental crowns are placed over an existing tooth to restore a tooth’s shape, size, and overall strength.  They are typically used to restore a tooth that may be broken, support a tooth that had a large filling, cover severe tooth stains as in tetracycline, hold dental bridges, and/or to protect a weak tooth.

Nancy Summer Lerch, DDS, FAGD, AAACD knows that oral health and beauty in smiles are both important traits when treating teeth.  Dr. Lerch and her team work to provide patients with the procedures and services to achieve a healthy and stunning smile.  Through this blog, you will learn more about porcelain fused to metal crowns and the benefits that this procedure can provide to an individual.  Keep reading to learn more about this procedure offered at the Center for Esthetic Dentistry, LLC.

For as long as you can remember, you have wished that a certain tooth would not longer have a chip in it.  It has bothered you for years, and every time you notice it in the mirror, you want the secret potion to make it disappear.  However, it seems like every option for cosmetic dentistry is too involved, and much too expensive.

This is where Nancy Summer Lerch, DDS, FAGD, AAACD can help with cosmetic dental bonding.  Dental bonding allows for you to repair a tooth quickly and at a much lower cost than other cosmetic dentistry options.  Through this blog, you will learn about cosmetic bonding, and find out if the service could be right for your dental needs.  Keep reading to learn more!

Cosmetic Dental Bonding for Beautiful Results

Cosmetic bonding is a dental service that uses a tooth-colored resin to repair a tooth that may be:

  • Decayed
  • Chipped
  • Fractured
  • Severely Stained

The resin is applied to the tooth after a simple preparation process.  When the resin is applied, it is molded to fit the exact shape that you desire.  Using a strong light, Dr. Lerch is then able to harden the resin so it remains in the set shape.  The total time for this procedure is typically between 30 minutes to one hour.

Many patients choose dental bonding to address a tooth that requires a cosmetic modification.  Dental bonding is one of the least expensive dental procedures and requires minimal time for completion.

In addition, Nancy Summer Lerch, DDS, FAGD, AAACD combines dentistry with artistry to achieve the right shading and molding of the resin so that each patient can achieve the ideal smile results.  For a dentist that is committed to every detail throughout every cosmetic dentistry procedure, look no further than Dr. Lerch.

Tooth Colored Versus Amalgam Fillings

Different Types of Dental Fillings

It used to be that you did not have a choice in the type of filling that you would have when a cavity needed to be filled.  Using amalgams was the common practice, and the combination of different metals was considered to be an acceptable option in dentistry.

Today, many patients are requesting composite fillings, which are tooth colored and blend seamlessly with the look of natural teeth.  These fillings are mercury free and allow for a patient to have a tooth filled without any dotting of silver in the mouth.  Composite fillings allow for a beautiful smile, without the use of mercury.  To learn more about tooth-colored fillings, keep reading Nancy Summer Lerch, DDS, FAGD, AAACD’s blog.

Tooth Colored Fillings and Nancy Summer Lerch, DDS, FAGD, AAACD

A cosmetic dentist will use composite fillings are made from dental materials that are tooth-colored.  These dental materials look natural and blend with the natural color of the teeth.  Allowing for aesthetics to be maintained ensures that patients can combine excellent oral care with beautiful dental aesthetics.

Tooth colored fillings are created from a mixture of resin mixed with quartz fillers.  Because of the size of these fillers, a composite filling is able to remain durable while also being able to be polished for a natural look.  Dental bonding completes the composite process by bonding the tooth colored filling into its correct placement.  When performed correctly, the bond is extremely strong and very durable.

Nancy Summer Lerch, DDS, FAGD, AAACD uses composite fillings to fill teeth in both the front and back of the mouth.  In addition, Nancy Summer Lerch, DDS, FAGD, AAACD can replace existing amalgam fillings with composite fillings.  Dr. Lerch only uses the latest technology and methods to ensure that her patients are kept safe during the amalgam replacement process.

Tooth colored fillings allow for patients to achieve a beautiful result using safe dentistry procedures.  In addition, tooth-colored fillings do not require as much tooth to be removed as with amalgams to hold a filling in place.  A healthy tooth can then be preserved with a composite filling with added support from the dental bonding.

Learn More about Composite Fillings

Composite fillings only require one visit to Nancy Summer Lerch, DDS, FAGD, AAACD’s New Haven Emergency Dental office and can help patients achieve a beautiful and healthy smile.  If you would like to learn more about having a composite filling, or to learn about having an amalgam replaced, do not hesitate to contact our Center for Esthetic Dentistry.  We are here to answer all of your questions about the procedure, and help you find if composite fillings are a good choice for you.

Nancy Summer Lerch, DDS, FAGD, AAACD is passionate about delivering unparalleled services to each dental patient.  To find out more about our procedures and services, please contact our New Haven office today.
