Onlays are most commonly used for restorative dental purposes on rear teeth that have a moderate amount of tooth decay or old filling damage. They are created from gold, composite resin, or porcelain. Onlays are used to maintain the structure of the teeth. They are also designed to treat tooth decay that is not too extensive.
Dental onlays offer a nice conservative approach to helping you maintain your teeth for the long term when needing restorative treatment.
During a visit with Nancy Summer Lerch, DDS, FAGD, AAACD, your tooth needing the onlay will be prepared, a mold created and a temporary onlay fabricated. The onlay impression is sent to the dental laboratory, and a customized onlay is created following the dimensions of the mold, the original tooth and taking into consideration your bite. In a following visit, the temporary onlay is removed and the permanent dental restoration is placed and bonded.
Dental onlays can also be used for larger incidences of tooth decay. They can eliminate tooth decay and serve as a preventative measure for tooth loss. During a dental consultation, Dr. Summer Lerch will evaluate if dental onlays are necessary for you.
