A dental bridge is a type of dental restoration that is used to replace a missing tooth. The bridge literally “bridges” the gaps between the teeth. A “pontic” or replacement tooth, is joined to anchors, “abutments”, i.e. adjacent teeth or dental implants. The anchor teeth secure the replacement tooth in place. Dental bridges works best with one or two missing teeth.
Most commonly, dental bridges are used to:
- Restore functionality of chewing
- Distribute the force of a bite so that it is even across more teeth
- Restore the aesthetics of a smile
- Maintain the shape of the face so that it does not appear hollow or sunken in
- Ensure that other teeth do not shift out of place
Materials can include:
a) precious metal substructure overlaid with white porcelain;
b) white zirconia substructure with porcelain over the top; or
c) a specially fabricated all porcelain bridge material.
Anyway you choose, a bridge can be made very, very esthetically pleasing when fabricated by a talented Accredited cosmetic dentist working closely with a talented laboratory technician.
