Tooth Colored Fillings

dental-bondingMore patients today are requesting composite, or tooth-colored fillings, instead of amalgam fillings. Composite fillings are made from tooth-colored dental materials that allow for patients to maintain good oral health, without having to compromise on the aesthetics of the teeth.

Composite fillings are made of a mixture of resin mixed with quartz fillers.  The size of these fillers gives the composite it durability and it’s polish-ability.  Composites are held into the tooth through a process called dental bonding.  This process allows the filling to form covalent bonds with the crystalline structure of the enamel and dentin of a tooth.  When done correctly this frms a very strong and durable bond.

This bond allows composite fillings to blend seamlessly with natural teeth, making them an excellent long term and cosmetic alternative to silver fillings.  Since composite fillings look natural, they can be used for fillings towards the front or back of the mouth.  Dr. Lerch can also use composites to replace existing failing silver mercury fillings.

Composite fillings are created without mercury, which provides patients with a safe dentistry option for oral health.  In addition, tooth-colored fillings do not require as much tooth to be removed to hold a filling.  This allows for more preservation of a healthy tooth while the composite material bonds for added tooth support.

Patients can have the composite filling procedure completed in only one visit to Nancy Summer Lerch, DDS, FAGD, AAACD’s New Haven, Connecticut dental office.  The procedure is simple and painless when used with laser or local anesthetic aand leaves patients with durable, long-lasting results.
